BELGRADE - Montenegro is the country that has made more progress towards EU
membership but such process has stopped and no further progress has been
recorded over the past two years, said Miroslav Lajcak, the EU representative
for the western Balkans. He urged authorities in Podgorica to show more
commitment for the country's European future.

"During my visit to the country last year I spoke about the feelings in
Brussels and that Montenegro had disappeared. The previous government had good
intentions and valid documents, but there was no concrete action. Montenegro
was not seen nor heard in Brussels", Lajcak told Montenegro's news agency Mina.
The Slovakian diplomat said EU adhesion is not obtained with inaction, speaking
instead of progress made by Albania, North Macedonia and Serbia. "No other
country in the region is in front of Montenegro, which has however lost its
dynamism, dealing more with itself than with its European path", noted Lajcak.

"Time has been lost and it is now necessary to recuperate", he stated, adding
that Podgorica has opened the last negotiating chapter with the EU in June 2020.
