Vucic: Drastic reduction of firearms Darko Popović 2–3 minutes _____ Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said on Sunday evening that the number of firearms would be drastically reduced following the two mass shootings in the past week. Speaking live on the Serbian state TV (RTS), Vucic said that the reduction would be drastic “up to 90 percent” mainly handguns, adding that parliament will introduce stiffer penalties for firearms violations with the police seizing illegal weapons and ammunition. “These very strict measures will change our society,” he said and added that the measures will meet with huge resistance. “We will do our best and continue to live normally. I believe that,” he said. “Without ever forgetting the victims and tragedies, without glorifying the perpetrators but the angelic children and the people the criminals killed, we have to think about how things are now so that something like this never happens again,” he said. Vucic said that a one month grace period had been introduced to hand over illegal firearms and ammunition and appealed to people to hand them over to the police. He said that the police found several automatic rifles and 650 rounds of ammunition in a Belgrade suburb left by the side of the road. Vucic said that he is glad that more police officers would be brought in to allow every school to have its own officer. According to him, the constant presence of police officers in schools will help reduce peer violence. He said that 1,300 police officers are retiring and that jobs would be given to 2,500 new officers. The president spoke out against the protest against violence called by some opposition parties for Monday evening saying that it is an insult for everyone. “This is not done, it’s not good for the state,” he said. -- http:www.antic.org --- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "SERBIAN NEWS NETWORK" group.
