Groselj: Serbia could be bypassed

The head of the European Parliament election observer mission Klemen Groselj
told N1 on Tuesday that the Serbia could be bypassed in the European Union
expansion process.

He said that Serbia could face a situation similar to Turkey. “I am worried
that a European opportunistic policy could prevail which means that Serbia
would be tolerated but that once the EU expansion process starts Serbia will
not be part of it… I am afraid that Serbia will be trapped with the EU and US
expecting a solution to the Kosovo issue, which does not mean recognition, on
one side and on the other side the focus would be on Montenegro, Ukraine and
Moldova,” he said.

According to him, some EU member states will tolerate events in Serbia because
they expect new business opportunities while others will block Serbia’s path to
the EU resulting in a stalemate. He warned that Serbia is losing economic
development opportunities.

Groselj said Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is seen as a useful partner is
Brussels and Washington who has made some progress in the Belgrade-Pristina
dialogue. “It’s a kind of exchange between expectations in Brussels and events
in Serbia and recognition of Kosovo is expected at the end by Vucic and his
party. I know that no one in Serbia will ever do that but as long as that is
the prevailing view, things will remain the same,” he warned.
