Demostat: EPP prevents debate on Serbian elections

The European Parliament (EP) will not debate on the Serbian December 17
elections next week, as there was no agreement among the political groups for
the issue to be put on the agenda, Demostat learned from sources in the EP.

According to Demostat’s source, the European People’s Party (EPP) opposed the
debate the most. The EPP has the most seats in the EP and Standing Rapporteur
for Serbia Vladimir Bilcik is a member, but members of Germany’s Christian
Democratic Union (CDU) Austrian People’s Party (OVP) and Italy’s Forza Italia
were also against it.

“There will probably be no debate on the elections in Serbia before the
publishing, in February, of the final report of the international observation
mission, which also comprised members of the European Parliament. There wasn’t
enough support from the political groups for this subject to be on the agenda
of the plenary session, and the EPP was particularly against it,” said
Demostat’s source in Brussels.

Demostat recalled that an MEP from the Renew Europe political group, Klemen
Groselj, told N1 on Tuesday that a debate on the Serbian elections would be on
the EP agenda even before the final ODIHR report, and that the MEPs would also
react to the Serbian government officials’ attacks on the members of the ODIHR
election observation mission, especially that against Andreas Schieder.

On the other hand, EP Standing Rapporteur for Serbia Vladimir Bilcik said no
international investigation into the latest elections in Serbia should be
expected and that it was up to the Serbian institution to remedy possible
election irregularities.

“I am not expecting and it would be unusual to expect any international
investigation in relation to the elections,” Bilcik told Voice of America
(VoA), Beta reported.
