The Central Bank of Kosovo (CBK) has banned all currency other than the Euro,
the KoSSev news portal said on Thursday.

“The Euro is the only currency allowed for cash payments in the Kosovo payments
system,” a central bank decree said adding that the CBK is the only authority
with the power to decide about currenc, including which Euro notes can be used.

It said that currencies other than the Euro can only be used as savings or for
international payments. The CBK said currency can be exchanged only in offices
which it has licensed. KoSSev said the new rules take effect on February 1.
The CBK is also banning the use of 500 Euro notes as an anti-forgery measure.

The decree did not make any specific mention of the Serbian currency, the
Dinar. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said earlier this week that the Dinar
would be banned as legal tender in Kosovo evn though it is in use in the
northern majority-Serb northern municipalities.

The Serb National Council of Kosovo and Metohija said that Vucic’s statement
that Kosovo could abolish payments with Serbia was agreed between Belgrade and
Pristina earlier, adding that the Office for Kosovo told state employees in
Kosovo to close their accounts in the NLB Komercijalna Bank and open new ones
in the Post Office Savings bank so that they can be paid through the Kosovo
Finance Mnistry.
