No Balkan Stability without Serbian-Hungarian Alliance, Says Viktor Orbán

The Hungarian and Serbian people do not live side by side, but with each other,
and without the Serbian-Hungarian cooperation there can be no stability in the
Balkan region, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán emphasized on Thursday in Subotica
(Szabadka), after receiving the István Pásztor Award, named after the leading
figure of the Hungarian minority in Vojvodina.
“Throughout our history, Serbs and Hungarians have never been on such good
terms or had such a good relationship as we do today. This is a fact that no
one can dispute today. A lot of work has gone into this,” he added. “Peace,
stability, and economic prosperity in the Balkans will be assured if there is
and remains a relationship of trust and strategic partnership between Serbia
and Hungary,” Orbán stated.
“What we call friendship in everyday life, what we call good relations between
our peoples, is called an alliance in international politics. In short, this
means that you know you can count on each other. If you have a problem, you can
turn to them, and if they face challenges in life, you help them without
question. We are living in such times right now. The significance of our
cooperation goes beyond the relationship between the two peoples and is
intended to stabilize the entire Balkan world, the entire region. (…) Let’s not
be modest, without Serbian-Hungarian cooperation there can be no stability in
the entire Balkan region,” he stated.
We are experiencing changes in the world today that reevaluate
Serbian-Hungarian relations. The old world we have lived in until now is
falling apart before our eyes,”
he explained. PM Viktor Orbán added that Western Europe “is losing its
remaining influence these very days.”
“The Americans and Russians are negotiating the future, while the people in
Brussels are waiting in the hallway and peeking through the keyhole. Europe is
still making plans for war, while everyone else is already negotiating peace,”
the Prime Minister elaborated. He pointed out that this could be laughed off,
but it is rather worrying and dangerous, “because Brussels leaders have become
so influenced by their own war propaganda that it is now jeopardizing the
security of the entire continent.”
In his opinion, this is why alliances such as the one between Hungarians and
Serbs are becoming more valuable. Hungarians and Serbs have vitality. “We do
not want to give up on ourselves, we do not want to disappear from the map, we
do not want to become insignificant. However, separately, we are not strong
enough. Separately, we are just trees, but together we are a forest, and it is
the forest that can withstand the storm. This is the philosophy of Central
European cooperation. If we cooperate, join forces, help each other, and stand
together against attempts at political destabilization organized from abroad,
we will find ourselves in a better world,” he emphasized. Orbán added, “History
rarely offers such a good opportunity to two peoples, and we have now been
given one.”
He said that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is a leader of a kind that is
rare, “even though we need more of them in European politics.”
