Serbian President Aleksandar
Vucic<https://www.telegraf.rs/teme/aleksandar-vucic> has told Reuters that
Serbia will continue to buy large quantities of gas from
Russia<https://www.telegraf.rs/teme/russia>, but also plans to buy 500 million
cubic meters per year, which is a fifth of the total, through the EU mechanism
of joint gas procurement, which Serbia joined last year.

Vucic said that Serbia is diversifying its energy supply and that it is already
in negotiations to buy natural gas through this EU mechanism.

Reuters writes that Serbia wants to join the EU and is one of the few remaining
buyers of Russian natural gas in Europe, since it gets more than 80 percent of
its supplies from Russia.

Vucic said that he understands EU's policy towards Russian energy and added
that Serbia must adapt its energy policies to the demands coming from Brussels.

"We will still get large quantities of Russian gas, but we are buying more and
more from the Europeans," Vucic said.

He added that Serbia already buys gas from Azerbaijan via Bulgaria, and that
the construction of a gas pipeline leading to North Macedonia, which would
provide access to liquid natural gas from Greece, should begin this year.

He added that the construction of a gas pipeline towards
Romania<https://www.telegraf.rs/teme/romania> is planned to be done in 2027.

"That is great diversification," stressed Vucic.

Vucic reiterated that Serbia is firmly on the European path.

"There is no doubt that, as long as I am president, Serbia will be on the EU
course," said Vucic.
