I was driving my 86 Sentra Hatchback the other night, and my batt lite came
on.

If I put my high beams on the lite would dim, but otherwise would stay
bright.

I was almost home when the lite went dim, not off, but dim. The next day
it starts up, very dim lite. I check the Alt. output, and it was 14.1 volts.
Lite appeared to be off. I look underneath, dont smell anything
unusual, but see the wire to the ballast resistor ( I think that is what it
is , not sure, looks like a large stubby firecracker), is broken. This wire
shares the "E" terminal w/the Alt. lead.

Would the broken ballast resistor lead cause the light to go on? I have an
84 Nissan Service manual so Im not sure if there was a revision since then.
My 84 manual shows no ballast resistor. Since my car is an 86, Im hoping
someone can help me out.
Do you think Nissan will have this resistor? Can I make do w/out it? I
have a spare Alt from another 84 that I had parted out. Other than this the
car runs great, and gets between 27-30 mpg, a/c on and rotting in Midtown
traffic to and from LGA airport.

   Thanks in advance,

 Bernie NJ
