If you have the Weapon R filter you don't have to change it after 6 months,
buy the filter cleaning kit and just clean it every couple of months. The
weapon r filter has a foam element so make sure you buy the proper cleaning
kit...

If by "homemade" you mean you pulled the stock airbox off then attached a
MAF adaptor with the new WR filter....Then you should have plenty of
air...More than the stock setup..
As far as less gas milage...are you revving more since you changed the
intake? trying to get that grawl sound...lol
