For what it's worth, both of my outer CV joint boots have been split wide
open since at least last November when I noticed them, and I have noticed no
weird noises or other evidence of damage to the joints. These will get
replaced eventually, as they will fail at some point, but in the meantime, I
would rather spend the money on other goodies.
