>Not true at all. Most auto parts stores rent these tools out.
>All you do is buy it and return it. That is what you are supposed
>to do. How is that the wrong option to give?
Yeah, I was told this by an AutoZone manager! I needed a gear puller, so I
called AutoZone and asked, verbatim, "Do you rent gear pullers?". The
manager's response, verbatim, was "Well, you can just buy it and then return
it--that's how we do it." In any event, I don't see this as being some big
moral issue--when was the last time you saw an autoparts store that wasn't
part of some monolithically huge franchise chain? They know people do this,
they account for it, and probably encourage it, actually, because they know
if they allow for little niceties like the "rental" deal, they are likely to
do more business all in all. I mean, really, when was the last time you only
needed *one* thing for any given car-related task? You "rent" a sensor
socket, you buy anti-seize compound and some electrical tape--you avoid
buying something you might need once more in the next two years, the store
makes two sales and earns a few brownie points with a customer. I fail to
see the problem.
