I seriously doubt opening the air box is causing the problem.
Doesn't the stock setup take air from the inside of the engine bay as well?

I have a chronic pinging problem I cannot cure so I've given up on trying to
fix it. Hopefully the engine will fall apart sooner or later so I can get a
sr20de motor in there.

EIther way, looks like the pinging you have is heat related.
When is the last time you you ran some combustion chamber cleaner down the
engine? Carbon deposits can act like glow plugs and retain heat causing
igniting the air/fuel mixture at the wrong time. Try a couple bottles of
Techron fuel system cleaner until the problem goes away on 87 octane gas.
I won't assume you are having EGR problems since the problem is only there
when warm.
