Hi all,

I'm new to this list, and haven't had much time to browse
the archives, so forgive me if this has been discussed before.

   I have two Sentras --an '86 (M# PB11) with a E16 (S) 1597
engine and a RS5F30A FB38 5-speed transmission, and a '87
(M#PB12) w/ E16 (S) 1597 and a RS5F31A FC38 5-speed.
I'm pretty sure that the '86 is all original, but I do know that both
engine & tranny have been changed in the '87 --I think they're
the same parts as original. I can't find the [engine& tranny]
identification on either car where Chilton's says it should be,
so I'm just going by the I.D. plate on the firewall. I did find this
number-- 9Y201 --on the tranny housing on the '86, but it doesn't
seem to match with anything that Chilton's lists.

Here's the scoop. Fifth gear went out (won't stay in gear)
on the '86 a while back due to (I think!) wear on the
transmission after several of the mounting brackets broke off
of the case. So I bought the '87 (it's slightly beat up from a
fender bender) w/ the hopes of salvaging & transfering the
transmission. My question is if this is possible or if it's totally
stupid to try. Chilton's tranny chart says that the 5 speed is
the same from '82 to '87, but a salvage yard guy told me that
only the ones from '83 to '86 are interchangeable-- who's right?
Are there signifigant differences between the RSF30A & the
RSF31A? Has anyone actually done a swap like this? Do you
know of websites or manuals that could give me more info?

Sorry this post is so long, but I tried to describe everything
in detail. I'm still pretty green as mechanical stuff, so tell me
if I'm not giving ya'll the right info. Any help is much appreciated!

Regards,
Caleb
