SML: bumpstops?

hi i noticed a lot of quesitons reguarding bumpstops and cutting them. i plan on 
lowering my se-r once i get it and was wondering what the deal is? what exactly is a 
bumpstop? i've replaced the struts on my b12 on all for wheels and i have no idea what 
it is... thanks
