That is hard to believe that the radiator drain plug is hard to crack open.  
Did you use a large phillips and some torque?  The thermo housing should be 
the same, you need a small copper pipe that  the socket wrench will fit onto, 
then simply hit the pipe with a hammer and crack the bolts loose.  The hose I 
never removed when I did my thermostat.  It worked fine and no leaks.  The 
gasket material was still good, so I simply wiped it off of all coolant and 
tightened it back up.  There is a block nut that drains the coolant just 
below the exhaust manifold, that needs removed.  There is a air bleed valve 
below the distributor (just under it)  10mm bolt.  Remove this, the coolant 
just needs drained from all.  Then I flushed it out with a garden hose until 
clear and used 50/50 mix back into the radiator until full.
