Matt:
If you do remove your power steering pump it might make your steering wheel
harder to turn. The rack and pinion setup in your steering is designed to be
used with a power steering pump to make it easer to turn the steering wheel.
I think to safely remove the power steering pump you would also need to
replace your rack and pinion with one from a Sentra that is set up to use
manuel steering. Yes, by removing your power steering pump fan belt, it would
not drive the power steering pump any longer and it would free up some horse
power, how much would you gain by removing it? I don't really know for sure
but just by taking a guess I'd say only about 3 to maybe 5 horse power at the
most. I think it would be easyer and cheaper in the long run to find out
where the leak is and repair it, if your able to do this type of work
yourself, if you find the leak to be in the rack and pinion and if the repair
will be costly then at that time I might think about changing over the rack
and pinion to a manuel type, but I'd first check out both cost factors. Also
and I'm not 100 percent sure about this but I think your ECU has some
kind/type of control for the power steering as I think as the car is driven
faster some how the power steering is tightened up to give a better road
feel. The tigher road feel may not come from the ECU, it may be due to the
increase in speed and the power steering pump is some how changed to do this,
but I kind of remember reading some place is my service book that there is
some kind of a sensor for this, I think it is located (looking at the car
from the front with the hood up, your right side facing the drivers side) on
the passenger side up by/around where the fender and firewall come together
on the passenger side. I don't have my service manuel handy or I could tell
you right where I've seen the elect. wire with the plug for this, but now
that I think about it, this maybe just some kind of a senor to let you know
when your power steering fluid is low. Anyway, look in a service book and I'm
sure you'll find out what I'm trying to explane to you. Sorry for being so
vage about where things are, Hope this will be of some help to you.
