Yep, basically the same here.

I have an '87 Pulsar that came with a 4 speed (I love this car but, not
knowing much about cars when I bought it***and still not knowing a lot***I
didn't really understand what I was missing out on not having the 5 speed.
I'm sure I don't have to tell anyone on the list, but just in case anyone
doesn't know, it's a world of difference. When you feel the 5 speed in
another car like yours, you'll feel the aggravation of not having it in your
car. Guaranteed).

Anyway, my third gear has gone out (pops out of gear, which seems to be a
major problem for lots of people with these cars) and I want to dump it and
go for the 5 speed. I've been searching for one and I came on a site called
"Junkyarddog" http://www.junkyarddog.com. There you can make a parts request
and have it sent out to a lot of junkyards they're connected to, who then
send you quotes. I tried it out and I got the following quotes back for this
tranny...

$325 (shipping included).
$225 plus shipping, 30 day warrantee.
$275.
$150 plus shipping.
$275-inspected, cleaned palletized & is ready for shipping & has a 90 day
warranty.
$200 plus shipping.

6 quotes just like that. Unfortunately I forgot to ask if a warrantee came
with it and what shipping costs to my zip code would be, but I learned.

Now as for installation, I don't know. I'm a pretty basically know-nothing
when it comes to mechanics. The closest I came to doing something like that
is my clutch went out in an old bmw I had and I tried to replace it. I got
the tranny off ok but then had trouble getting it back on. I may try again
with this car using knowledge from the last experience, because this one
looks like it may be an easier job. But I don't know. If I got a heck of a
lot of encouragement (and advice :) from this list I may think about it.
Otherwise, I wonder if anyone out there can give some info on what they
think would be a fair price to pay to get this transmission installed?

Incidentally, about the popping out of gear problem, I heard someone say
that this is often caused by a messed up "gear flag." Can anyone give any
info about that?

Good luck (to both of us). And thanks for any help anyone can provide!

why Isn't more popular).
