Does the motor have a tapping sound that increases as you accerate? if it
does it sounds like the lifters are out of adjustment or you need to add oil.
My KA24E used to tap really loud and I added a quart of oil and it stopped.
Check that first and maybe that will cure it. If not, then you may need a
valve lash adjustment. Other possible sources of the ticking or tapping may
be the bottom end (pistons rods and crank). You may have spun a bearing on
one of the connecting rods. I had a car that made a really bad thumping or
loud tapping sound and it turned out I spun a bearing. This is a worse case
scenerio, I don't want to scare you, but it could be that. I don't like to
predict things when I don't here them for myself. Another thing it could be
is that one of the rocker arms may be cracked also. I don't remember if the
valve train is direct acuating or has rocker arms. If it is a 12 valve, it
has rocker arms. Take the valve cover off and wiggle each rocker arm and
check for severe play, that may be the problem.
