Uh, hell yes, it will suffer. If you just bolted up a turbo, regardless of
boost level, with the factory timing and fuel supply, you would detonate as
soon as the engine saw more than a couple pounds of boost. You *might*
possibly be able to get away with retarding the timing several degrees at
the distributor, but the car would run like crap off-boost and there is
still the issue of fuel enrichment to be dealt with. If you don't want to
get a properly tuned ECU, you could use an aftermarket ignition box which
retards the timing the higher the RPM and then use a rising rate fuel
pressure regulator to handle the additional fuel needed. But, to make this
even more complicated is the fact that the stock injectors do not have much
extra headroom--they probably can't flow enough fuel for even an extra 40
hp. Furthermore, neither of the above items are cheap, and to get them tuned
properly you would have to spend some time on a dyno with some good
diagnostic equipment, which is definitely not cheap either. Unless you are
intentionally trying to blow your engine in a spectacular fashion, get a Jim
Wolf ECU tuned for a turbo--it will not cost you any more than the
above-mentioned ghetto tuning method, it will be *way* easier, it will
probably make more power, and it will give you a *much, much* larger margin
of safety.

Hope this helps.
