I would not try this either. That stuff becomes really messy when heated
(like when a grinding wheel gets caught in it).

I have some experience with this, although it wasn't for weight
reduction. My first car had several large rust holes in the floor. Before
these could be repaired I had to remove the tar. I used a hammer and
chisel. Once the chisel gets underneath the edge you can sometimes break
off fairly large pieces. I have no idea if dry ice works, but this is such
a boring job that anything that speeds up the process would be very nice!
