Breather filters are used to bypass the PCV system on an engine. Instead of
routing blow-by gasses into the intake tract, some people close off the
holes on the intake and put breather filters on the engine's crankcase
vents. The only reason to do this is if your car is consuming oil through
the PCV system. Don't let some idiot riceboy tell you that you need them on
your car. By defeating the PCV system, you introduce a lot a couple of
potentially serious maintenance and longevity issues. Trust me on this--I
have screwed around with my PCV so much and researched it so in-depth, I am
probably an expert at this point.
