SML-NON-P: tranny q

ok, i need to help out a friend. the problem is with an auto tranny. usually 
when you shift from park the shifter will slide right into third gear, the 
problem is the shifter goes past 3rd down to second. Whats going on here?, is 
there a line that needs to be adjusted or is the tranny on its way... thanks
