Screening for sepsis is part of our MEWS escalation policy. Any score 5 or above the patient should be screened and critical care outreach contacted. I am conscious many of the MEWS systems will be different, but ours is based on temp, resp. rate, heart rate, BP, oxygen sats, O2 therapy, and urinary output. In the UK there is a drive to move to the National Early Warning Score so that all providers are using the same parameters (Original document can be searched under the Royal College of Physicians - NEWS), but the escalation will be similar - 5 or more, or a single parameter at 3 (top score).
