The culture bottles at our facility are kept "just in case" for up to 24 hours, but it would depend on your bottle's manufacturer's recommendations.
The problem I have sometimes in the ICU is getting a large enough blood volume/sample as the blood culture vials (aerobic/anaerobic) need approximately 10-20 ml each. If the patient is already hemodynamically compromised, getting enough blood might be problematic. I asked out bacti department, and they said they could not find any information about the pre-hospital cultures.
