Subject: Surviving Sepsis

While speaking with our Clinical Nurse Specialist, she mentioned you are a
great resource on the implementation of Sepsis measures in developing
countries. I have some questions for you, and I hope you might be able to help
us out.

I have been given the opportunity to travel to Malawi next week to visit
Ekwendeni Mission Hospital with the Medical Benevolence Foundation. As part of
our preparations, we were tasked by the hospital staff to compile information
on several subjects and provide some inservices . As I am a nurse with
critical care experience, and have some familiarity with the Surviving Sepsis
Campaign, I volunteered to do some staff education on the prevention and
treatment of sepsis. While I have not had too much trouble with general
infection prevention techniques, finding any definitive information on the
treatment of sepsis has been a more difficult task.

While researching a bit on the subject of sepsis, I found that the campaign is
difficult to implement in areas where resource shortages (medication,
equipment, etc.) exist. Any insights you have regarding sepsis, especially
neonatal and maternal sepsis (the incidence of prolonged membrane rupture is
high, and is a common source of infection for this community) which you can
share with us?

Thanks,

monitoring - posted on earlier listserv message / Patty Clinical Nurse
