Depending on the data you have at your sites, there are a couple of ways to
approach this. In my organization, I’m using our data trend over time showing
that as a program matures, the incidence of septic shock vs severe sepsis
trends flip- see graph below. The average cost in our system to manage shock is
25,000 vs 7,000 to manage severe sepsis. In short, if 4 – 5 cases of acute care
progression to shock are averted by systematic screening and timely aggressive
intervention, the reduction in cost of care ranges from 72,000 – 90,000 based
on those cases. Essentially shows that in the first months of a launch the cost
of this essential role in a sepsis program is covered. Also can use mortality
to show lives saved in addition to dollars saved. I’ve attached a job
description as a reference. Stress the importance of concurrent chart review
necessary for continuous process improvement initiatives and timely feedback to
the healthcare team. Identification of downward trends and fall outs are
quickly identified and corrected when a program is monitored.
