Dawn,

Once a patient has been declared brain dead and the OPO is on board, there is
even more reason to ensure that the donor is treated. And, the patients at
least in our system and confirmed with NHSN, still count as an HAI (CLABSI,
CAUTI, VAE). Even more important to be vigilant.

I have not found that exclusion in the CMS manual but since over 300 pages may
have missed it.

Subject: [Sepsis Groups] Patients deemed Organ Donors

We recently revised our sepsis screen to simplify it and include exclusion
criteria. Nurses have since questioned screening the patient who has been
designated an organ donor. I feel we should not exclude these individuals from
screening as we are concerned about organ viability. Any other facilities not
screening the organ donors.
