Strong Memorial Hospital is a tertiary care center. An Adult Sepsis Response team was initiated in April 2016 as part of the pre-existing Rapid Response Team. There isn't a policy but the procedure is as follows:
"The Adult Sepsis team will be comprised of the Rapid Response Team (CRN, Respiratory Therapy, Pharmacist, and APP) as well as a Medical ICU Critical Care fellow. The initial criteria to call an Adult Sepsis Team will be: 1) Known or suspected infection and 2) Systolic blood pressure < than 90 mm Hg and 3) Lactate > than 2 mmol/L Or faculty/staff concern that the patient may be septic. To activate the Adult Sepsis Team simply call the page operator at 5x2222 and request the Adult Sepsis Team to the appropriate location. The Adult Sepsis Team may be called by faculty or staff. The goal of the Adult Sepsis Team is to rapidly assess a potentially septic patient, determine the appropriate diagnosis and make recommendations to ensure we are providing the very best patient care in a timely fashion. The primary objective of the team is to oversee and assist the care of the patient and not necessarily assume the overall care of the patient. Some of these patients will require a higher level of care but others may not. This will be a decision made jointly by the primary team and the Adult Sepsis Team. As 80% of the septic patients at SMH come through the ED, the Adult Sepsis Team may be called to the Trauma Bay for yet to be admitted patients. We are aware of the new definitions for sepsis and septic shock and are implementing these changes into our hospital's treatment algorithm. In the meantime, like most hospitals our assessment and treatment algorithms remain the same. The only caveat now is that we are adding the Adult Sepsis Team to assist with care of such patients."
