I'm not sure that's what Jeremy was trying to do (he did, after all point out a few faults). Lipstick is required for everything :) MySQL can be coaxed into something useful. I only played with it for about a day or two before turning away in disgust. I haven't revisited newer versions, though. PostgreSQL has always been my goto lady. I hardly think it's a dead end but you never know. MonetDB is interesting, but there's almost <insert captain kirk's pause here> something <another one>, um fishy (like eschewing data types for performance type stuff) I'll check it out!
