Using the default 1.8 mode on JRuby 1.6.5.1 should work around the issue, 
as would upgrading to JRuby 1.7.0preview1.  There's a reason 1.9 mode 
wasn't the default in JRuby 1.6. :)

I'll push out a patch later today that should fix this for jruby 1.6 ruby 
1.9 mode.
