Sequel's DSL is starting to make sense. For a SELECT AS operation:

send(:select, :short_col_name, Sequel.as(:an_annoyingly_long_column_name, 
:aalcn))

gets me an array of hashes with keys :short_col_name and :aalcn.

Learning Ruby continues to be a series of pleasant surprises as opposed to 
the series of unfortunate events that characterized several other popular 
languages...
