have you ever used your system without internet access.
Yes it is a common scenario to have the controllers isolated in a DMZ.
If yes, how did you synchronized your servers.
Did you use NTP or another protocol instead?
If NTP, how did ntp.conf looked, did you use system clock of each
server as time source?
If you are just talking about NTP synchronization then you need it only
between controllers and you can setup a simple primary/backup
configuration for ntpd. There are howtos available on the web on how to
setup this.
The issue is that we can't have one dedicated NTP server to avoid have
this as one point of
failure.
Just make another server a backup in case the primary fails.
