PRISTINA, Serbia, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- Pristina District Court sentenced
Friday to 13 years in prison three ex-guerrillas of Kosovo Liberation Army
(KLA).

Rrustem Mustafa, member of the Kosovo parliament, Latif Gashi and Nazif
Mehmeti, were found guilty of war crimes committed in Kosovo in 1998 and 1999.

A mixed panel composed of a Kosovo judge and two judges of the EU Rule of
Law Mission (EULEX) issued the verdict in the war crimetrial of the so-called
"Llapi group" case, an EULEX statement said.

The panel found them guilty of war crimes through inhumane treatment of
civilian detainees including beating and torture of civilian detainees.

Gashi, Mehmeti and Mustafa were sentenced to six years, three years, and
four years in prison, respectively.

Mustafa is the deputy president of the Kosovo Democratic Party (PDK), which
governs Kosovo since January 2008 as it won the highest number of seats in the
120-seat parliament of Kosovo.

The case was prosecuted by an EULEX prosecutor.

The EULEX, which started on Dec. 9 last year officially implementing its
two-year mandate in Kosovo, is designed to replace the UN mission in Kosovo
(UNMIK) with some executive powers in judiciary, custom and police although the
UNMIK will remain in Kosovo to deal with issues concerning ethnic Serbs.

A breakaway province of Serbia, ethnic Albanian-dominated Kosovo
unilaterally declared independence in February 2008. However, Serbia has vowed
it would never recognize Kosovo's independence, regarding the move illegal and
in contrary with international law.
