The Guardian: Vucic will accept independence, Kosovo-Serbia deal within six months or a year GazetaExpress 2 minutes _____ The Guardian is reporting that Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic will accept independence only if Serbia gets something concrete in return. Vucic told The Guardian that he believes the final agreement between Kosovo and Serbia is possible within “six months or a year.” Vucic in an interview with the Guardian in Belgrade this week said he believed there is now a brief window of “six months or a year” in which it might be possible to sign a deal with Kosovo. The EU in its Enlargement Strategy published in February said that Kosovo and Serbia should start a final phase of the dialogue which should be concluded with a legally-binding agreement. “We are ready to discuss every single issue, we are ready to take into consideration every single proposal that would mean a compromise solution,” Vucic told The Guardian, provided Serbia is offered something in return. According to The Guardian Brussels hopes that a deal could be struck that would lead to Belgrade acknowledging if not formally recognising Kosovo’s independence, and would pave the way for Kosovo to take a seat at the UN and for both nations to begin a path towards EU membership. The Guardian reports that Vucic has also spent the past months engaged meetings with western leaders, trying to convince them that they should offer a compromise solution that brings concrete benefits for Serbia rather than simply acquiesce to the facts on the ground.
