Canada will issue $1 mln to Ukraine towards NATO army modernization efforts

Canadian authorities will render $1 million to Ukraine through the NATO Trust
Funds, a Canadian government reported on its Web site.

"Aid of $1 million will be transferred to the NATO trust funds to Ukraine build
up its command, control, communications, and computers capabilities, as well as
to implement NATO standards throughout the Armed Forces," the document said.

Moreover, the three NATO Centres of Excellence in the Baltic States –
Cooperative Cyber Defense, Energy Security and Strategic Communications – will
each receive support valued at up to $1 million (a total of $3 million) from
the government of Canada to help strengthen the regional framework for
addressing the crisis situation.

According to the statement, these measures meant to help to address security
challenges in the Eastern Europe posed by Russia's actions.

Previously NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen has said that NATO
member countries will provide EUR 15 million in assistance to Ukraine.

"The allies will assist Ukraine with around 15 million euros through NATO, and
in addition to that, we have heard several announcements of bilateral
assistance – financially and in other ways," he said following a meeting of the
NATO-Ukraine Commission in Newport (Wales) on Thursday.

Rasmussen said that a comprehensive and tailored package of measures had been
established so that Ukraine can better provide for its own security.
