Campaigning British Serb lawyer fights for justice in Kosovo

August 28, 2017

Britic speaks to Jovanka Savić, the London-based human rights lawyer who says
that justice has been denied to Serbian families in Kosovo for too long. And
she is taking their case to the Court of Appeal.

Jovanka has been fighting in the law courts for Britain to own up to its part
in the gross violation of human rights of Serbs and other minorities in Kosovo.

Since June 1999, following the NATO assault of former Yugoslavia, the
minorities in Kosovo – especially the Serbs – have been murdered and ethnically
cleansed. The minority that remain cling tenuously to what survives of their
lives while in Priština, the ethnic Albanian ‘war parties’ encircle parliament
looking to seize power.

Some 30,000 Serbs lived in Priština, the main city of the Serbian heartland
where their families have dwelt for centuries. Today just 30 Serbs live in
Priština. Many of the priceless cultural heritage of their forefathers were
razed to the ground. The situation was so calamitous that the Chief Prosecutor
of the EU Task Force concluded that a crime against humanity had been committed
at the time.

Yet to date not a single person has been convicted of any crime against a
member of the minority population of Kosovo since that date.

It might be easy to conclude that justice is impossible when gangs of lawless
thugs and terrorists roam the province with complete impunity. However, the KLA
(terrorists who have since been rebranded by the Western media) and their
progeny acted under the watch of those who claim to be guardians of human
rights, law and order in Europe and throughout the world:

* UNMIK is the UN mission to provide security to the province since June
1999
* EULEX is the EU-sponsored mission of several thousand police and
judicial personnel active in Kosovo since 2008
* The EU has given more than 2 billion euros to Kosovo since the
heartland was amputated from Serbia
* FFOR is a “peacekeeping” force for Kosovo led by NATO, the very
organisation which violated international law and bombing Yugoslavia, including
Kosovo

Britain has supported all of these institutions, both financially and with
military and other personnel.

That’s why Jovanka has turned to UK courts in her action of 2014 which was
funded through Legal Aid. The High Court ruled in favour of the Ministry of
Defence but mainly through a technicality – were the serious human rights
breaches the responsibility of the UK or UN?

The Court of Appeal granted permission to challenge this ruling. However, Legal
Aid funding was withdrawn.

So Jovanka has turned to our community to fund this last gasp effort for
Serbian families in Kosovo to finally see justice. Her CrowdJustice appeal has
raised over £1,000 in less than a week…but it needs to reach £5,000 to go ahead.

Moreover, Jovanka needs to tell the Court whether she will get the funds to
proceed with the case by 5 September.

Every Sunday, we pray for the salvation of Serbs who are suffering in Kosovo.
Now, is perhaps our last chance to support a legal challenge against those in
British politics and military who have let down our brothers and sisters, dead
or alive, in Kosovo.
