Hi Noel, I read your patch and the resulting version 1.18.4.8 thoroughly. Seems okay to me. I am hoping to find the time to test and deploy it soon.
Regarding your CVS comment "still fails with 1.4.1": The original patch I posted to the mailing list is still in production (it does what I wanted it to do) and running on a 1.4.1_02. Actually I can't see what could make the difference to your experience.
