You should wait an "official" answer from Danny or Noel... IMHO, the best thing you can do is to create a patch against the current trunk (or whatever version you prefer) and submit the "patch" to JIRA giving permissions to include the code to ASF (it is a flag when you add an attachment in JIRA). This way we can test the code and decide wether to include it in the next 2.3 release or move the integration to the following release.
