I just checked out the current v2.3, ran "ant dist", added the
activation and mail jars (from SUN packages), changed the
default.properties to reflect 2.3.0a3 version. I shared the results here:

About the status maybe the truth is in the middle: maybe the most
appropriate term for this release is "beta status", but in past James
only used alphas and rc (IIRC) so we can safely keep the "old" naming
style. I agree that naming this RC would be too much optmistic ;-)
