Joachim is the man that lately put more effort on the IMAP side.

cool :-) but how does it come that this not hosted at the ASF?
The process of becoming committer at ASF is long, so Joachim started
working on his own resources.
That said, IMAP is a major need for James, and Joachim made a big step
forward from the last proposal, so I hope that we'll be able to merge
his work for the 3.0 release.
IMAP support issue in our JIRA:
http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/JAMES-502
Javamail Store based MailRepository support:
http://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/JAMES-461
As you can see, attached to JAMES-502 there is an updated imap-dev
source package and instructions.
do I need to be logged in to see this attachment, because I see only the
proposal attachment or am I confusing something?
The last one from Joachim is james-imap2-proposal-extended-2.zip
My goal is to work on JAMES-461 but unfortunately I've been busy with
2.3 release and I did nothing yet.
is 461 a requirement for 502?
For IMAP to be included in an official James distribution, yes.
Current implementation by Joachim rely on a Javamail store
implementation and currently the only good implementation is Maildir
that is distributed under a license not compatible with ASL.
