IMAP is a great example of a very bad protocol totally unsuitable for
the internet
RSS/Atom is
more for webapps, which want to inform a user of site updates.
that's the point: email storage should a RESTful internet application.
the protocols should be capable of being implemented as a web
application. only then will it play well with the rest of the world
wide web.
This was only invented because there is no such feature as imap there...
