Please be aware that the document you linked report as  "last updated on 
2005-02-17". 3.5 years ago. AFAIK commons-logging 1.1.1 solved all of the 
classloader issues described in that article.

I would move away from commons-logging only for an IoC friendly log library 
where the logger is injected into components.
slf4j has an ILoggerFactory for this but this make it complicate.
It seems that the only IoC friendly logging libraries supporting child loggers 
are Avalon Logger and http://picocontainer.org/logging/. Both of them are not 
widely used.
