I guess it was there only for compatibility. IMHO we should stop caring of compatibility. We desperately need an up-to-date server, and it is better to have something new and NOT backward compatible than not having it at all. Conversion scripts/guides will be contributed by users needing them once we'll give them a good cause to upgrade :-)
