THe error says you don't have a "pom.xml" in the folder from which you run maven, and probably this means that you are not in the james folder or that you checked out the wrong tree. If you list the folder you should see a list of folders (they are james modules) and some files (NOTICE, LICENSE... and the pom.xml).
