For next release, we need to carefully test all functions.
I tested the imap/smtp one for M2, but not pop3.
Unit/Funtional tests can't cover everything.
For example, imap tests on the different mailboxes impl still does not
guarantee that imap from the outside will work.
In the middle run, we should have a test suite to run "from the outside"
of james.
I wonder if http://james.apache.org/mpt/ is the place to host this ?
If not, where to host ?

It has been reported on https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/JAMES-1136
that POP3 is broken in the Milestone 2 release of James 3.
You can use IMAP4 without any problem.
