I just deployed current trunk, and may broken POP3 mailbox is repaired.
Sylvain, from the log you posted, it seems that james didn't even start.
I don't see a pop3 communication in the log (maybe I'm wrong?).
If you run on linux, did you install libc6 (see
http://james.apache.org/server/3/install.html)
