Hello, I worked with Lukasz at moving James to OSGi during the ApacheCon hackathon. We managed to start james-mailbox memory implementation in Apache Karaf. The port just involved updating some configs and it should be possible to make a "dual boot" and run James inside OSGi with Spring or just with Spring with the same configuration.
The nice things that OSGi makes available has to do with managed configuration and exposing things as services, plus a console for administration. All in all the experience of working with OSGi was not so bad but requires some good understanding. You can see the results here: https://github.com/ieugen/james-mailbox/commits/trunk . Not much of a change but does a lot.
