Are you using file repository or db-repository?

If file, look under /james-installation-directory//apps/james/var/mail/error

I think they might be there. I don't know how you get them back, perhaps just moving those files to the spool directory might do it. Before you do that it might be interesting to change a few log settings in /james-installation-directory//apps/james/SAR-INF/environment.xml to DEBUG so that you can see in the logs what happens. After that you should be able to work out what needs to be done.

I got a:

"Result was ghost"

from the DEBUG listing. Does ghost means it is totally deleted?

Can you offer a hint of which part of the configuration I went wrong?
