What version of software are you using ? 

Could you try with 
a) 2.1 James build frp, http://jakarta.apache.org/site/binindex.cgi

and/or
b) Latest build from http://cvs.apache.org/builds/james-server/test-build/bin/


If this does not work could you mention your mozilla version. Also is your server on 
the internet ? If it is it should be easy to see the where the protocol breaks and 
trouble shoot.
