I've seen similar reports on discussion lists for other servers, so as you say, it doesn't seem to be James. IT appears to be the combination of JDK and linux kernel. That said, maybe we can at least document the known working and disfunctional combinations. That would be a pretty nice reference.

Having looked at this I can't see how James could be causing it, and Avalon
peeps say its not Phoenix, so I guess we blame Sun or Linux and wait till
someone else fixes something.
